BISHOPS WALK

Bishops Walk

Bishop's Walk, Harnham

Harnham Slope is one of the few wooded areas in Salisbury and forms an important green backdrop on the south side of the city. The footpath at the top of the slope, known as Bishop’s Walk, is a historic right of way given to the city by Bishop John Wordsworth at the end of the 19th C. The path is near the top of the steep escarpment and is subject to erosion and slippage raising significant health and safety issues and concerns for its future as a usable footpath.

One of the important facets of the work of SAGP is ‘Connectivity’, that is the links between communities both within the city and beyond. Walking, cycling and wildlife corridors are essential green infrastructure.  We would like to see new rights of way created to serve the growing housing developments around the city and the maintenance of existing routes so that they don't fall into disrepair.

Bishops Walk has required regular replacement of edging supports but this was beyond the scope of volunteers. We were able to secure funding in 2017 to implement a long term solution which would widen, stabilise, level and resurface the path to provide a safe, wheelchair friendly route as far as the viewpoint and so secure the future of this historic amenity for many years to come.  Sections of the bottom path have also been widened and resurfaced.

The work was funded by a Wiltshire Council Path Improvement Grant (PIGS) and the Salisbury Community Area Transport Group working with volunteers from South Wiltshire Ramblers.  See before and after pictures on the right.
